Northern Xinjiang or Southern Xinjiang?
Xinjiang is separated by Mount Tian, north of it is Northern Xinjiang, south of Mount Tian is Southern Xinjiang. Expats Holidays will help you with this frequent question from our lovely clients. The answer depends on which kind of traveler you are. If you love natural scenery and don’t mind a time limit we would recommend Northern Xinjiang. The cultural experiences, Southern Xinjiang will be your best choice. When you have more than 2 weeks for travel, then you can enjoy all of Xinjiang.
Northern Xinjiang
Kanas Scenery Spot
The view you see here is probably one of the most famous in all of Xinjiang. It doesn’t matter what season of the year, this bend in the river of Kanas Lake is a small piece of heaven on earth in northern Xinjiang.
Five-colored Hills
The Five Colored Hills, sometimes referred to as “Rainbow Beach” is an amazing combination of color and landscape that comes alive at dawn and dusk.
Nalati Scenic Area
Nalati Scenic Area is famous for its subalpine meadow landscape. The grasslands were formed by floods during the Tertiary Period and are surrounded by spectacular valleys, towering mountains, gorges, and forest. June is the best time to visit, when farmers bring their livestock and visitors can experience local life.
Huocheng Lavender Fields
The Yili region of Xinjiang has become known for their production of lavender – they claim to produce 95% of China’s lavender sub-products. During the summer months these fields of lavender clothe the region in a royal purple that is stunning.
Sayram Lake
Sayram Lake – the largest and highest alpine lake in Xinjiang. Given its proximity to Kazakhstan, you’re bound to run into quite a few Kazakh men riding their horses or trying to get you to stay in their yurt for a night.
Southern Xinjiang
Kashgar’s Old Town
Once a centerpiece of the ancient Silk Road, Kashgar’s Old City has undergone a lot of change over the past 5 years. You can explore the true Xinjiang life here.
Xinjiang’s Grand Canyon
One of the most beautiful, little-known places to visit near Kuqa is the Xinjiang Grand Canyon, also known as the Keziliya Grand Canyon. These valleys stretch for about 5 kilometers at an average depth of 1500 meters.
Kunlun Mountains
The Kunlun Mountains are the range that runs the border between Xinjiang and Tibet. You will likely seeing this range if you ever have the chance to travel the Tibet-Xinjiang highway, the highest paved road in the world.
Taklimakan Desert
After the great Sahara desert of northern Africa, the Taklamakan is the second biggest moving –sands desert in the world. The people of the Taklamakan, are mostly Uyghur.
Tarim Populus Euphratica National Forest Park
There is a lot to see and marvel at, with boardwalks, many trees and logged trunks perfect for a stunning photograph. You may ride the scenic train, climb the lookout tower, or spend all your time among the trees, logs and stumps.
Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves
The Kizil Thousand-Buddha Caves are corridor of murals surpassing other existing caves in China in its abundance in content, quantity and long duration. It is significant in Buddhism as well as in the history of Qiuci.
No matter if you choose Northern or Southern Xinjiang, there are many things waiting for you to explore this summer. If you have enough time for travelling, EH Guru would recommend to travel both, Northern and Southern Xinjiang, therefore you will not have to miss any of the above-mentioned sceneries.
