Explore Breathtaking Canyons in China

China is blessed with diverse and breathtaking natural landscapes, ranging from the rugged terrains of Tibet to the picturesque valleys found in the Yunnan. These regions offer enthusiasts the chance to engage in exceptional adventures. In this blog, we invite you to join us on a journey of exploration as we present the most outstanding gorge walking experiences that China has to offer.

Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon

The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is the longest and deepest valley in Tibet. It spans 504.9 kilometres in length and reaches a depth of 6,009 metres, featuring a range of geological features including glaciers, cliffs, steep slopes and rivers. Consequently, the Tibetans bestowed upon it the title of “The Last Fairyland in the World”. From the vantage point of the observation platform, visitors can appreciate the meander of the Yarlung Tsangpo River and its surrounding scenery. The location of Namcha Barwa Stone offers the optimal vantage point for viewing Namcha Barwa Mountain. We would advise that the best time for hiking the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is from early June to mid-October.

Nujiang Grand Canyon

The Nujiang Grand Canyon is the longest and most enigmatic, precipitous and unspoiled canyon in Yunnan. The canyon extends for over 300 kilometers and has an average depth of 2,000 meters. A number of minority groups reside along the Nujiang Grand Canyon. It is challenging to conceptualize how people can live on such steep inclines. The majority of mountain inhabitants reside in wooden structures, including sheds and huts, which are constructed on the side or even the top of the mountain. Access to villages on the opposite bank of the river is via narrow hanging bridges constructed with small wooden planks strung together with rattan tied to trees, or by sliding on overhead cables that span the river.

Tianshan Grand Canyon

Tianshan Grand Canyon, also known as the “King of Canyons,” is the largest red-layer canyon in the northern and southern regions of the Tianshan Mountains. It is renowned for its unparalleled aesthetic value. The canyon’s geological and geomorphic diversity is exceptional. The breathtaking scenery of red canyons set against the backdrop of distant snow-capped peaks creates a dreamlike landscape that captivates every visitor. At night, far from the hustle and bustle city, the sky reveals a stunning view of stars.

Daduhejinkou Grand Canyon

The Daduhe Jinkou Grand Canyon stretches approximately 26 km between Ya’an City and Leshan City in Sichuan Province. The valley’s average altitude is about 600 meters, with surrounding ridges reaching up to 2,600 meters. It is considered the longest, most perilous, deepest, and grandest canyon in Sichuan Province, standing 542 meters deeper than the famous Grand Canyon of the Colorado. The canyon’s narrowest point is a mere 10 meters wide, which is even 10 meters narrower than the renowned Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan.

Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon

Located in the southern part of the Taihang Mountains, the Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon is known for its majestic and varied mountain landscapes. The canyon is surrounded by lush vegetation, towering cliffs, and historic temples, creating a scenic area that spans 4,389 hectares with a forest coverage rate of 74.9%. The WuZhiFeng summit, resembling five fingers, stands prominently at the canyon’s entrance. This area is ideal for activities such as hang gliding, summer vacations, painting, and hiking.

Tiger Leaping Gorge

Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest gorges in the world and ranks among the top 10 world-famous hiking trails. Flanked by Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, the gorge offers an array of stunning and diverse landscapes. As one of China’s most popular tourist hikes, it’s easy to understand its appeal. The journey begins with a visit to the reconstructed old town of Lijiang, a short and scenic transfer from the village. The hike itself spans two days, offering easy walking through beautiful landscapes, with plenty of good food and comfortable accommodations along the way.
