Doi Inthanon National Park

Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in Thailand which is 2,565 meters above sea level. It is just a couple of hours’ drive southwest of Chiang Mai city. Due to its high elevation, temperatures remain cool year-round and during the cool season (November to February), it can drop low enough to form the frost. Doi Inthanon National Park boasts scenic nature trails, waterfalls, and Royal Projects. You can also find the stunning twin pagodas dedicated to King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit.

Kaeng Krachan National Park

If you’re staying in the Hua Hin or Cha Am area, a trip inland to Kaeng Krachan National Park offers you an alternative to a day at the beach. This largest national park in Thailand was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2021. The park is renowned as one of the top wildlife spotting destinations in the country, home to hundreds of bird species and a variety of mammals, including elephants, leopards, gibbons, bears, and deer. Other famous attractions in the park such as the picturesque reservoir and the beautiful Pala-U waterfall await your exploration.

Khao Yai National Park

Khao Yai was the first of Thailand’s National Parks established in 1962. It is located 100 miles from Bangkok as one of the easiest national parks to reach from the capital. You will be amazed by the lush flora and fauna, tons of birds, waterfalls, beautiful hikes, and less crowded.

The park is home to the largest virgin rainforest in the region and is considered a remnant of one of the world’s oldest rainforests. Wildlife here includes elephants, deer, macaques, and gibbons. The best places to visit in this park are the Emerald Lake and the viewpoint at Ko Mae Ko, which is accessible via a staircase. Another breathtaking viewpoint is located on Ko Wua Talap, offering a wider view of the surrounding islands. However, reaching this viewpoint requires a bit of effort, as it involves a steep trail. Be sure to wear a pair of trainers with you.

Mu Ko Similan

Similan Islands are one of the best diving and snorkeling locations in Thailand. You can find the day trip from Khao Lak or Phuket. The Similan Islands are known for their steep granite mountains, beautiful beaches, and unique rock formations. Covered in lush tropical jungle, the islands are home to pristine, mud-free beaches, offering some of Thailand’s finest white sand stretches.

For history enthusiasts, remnants of the Death Railway can still be seen in Sai Yok and shouldn’t be missed if you are travelling to Hellfire Pass.

Your one-day exploration typically includes a visit to the Bang-Phu fishing village, a scenic boat ride, and a trek to the Phraya Nakhon Cave where you’ll find the royal pavilion.

Please note that many of Thailand’s national parks close for part of the year, typically during the low or rainy season. This closure allows the parks to rejuvenate and helps keep visitors safe, as some trails and caves can become hazardous in wet weather.
