This is one of the most fantastic cities you ever have been to. A modern capital with a warm hospitality that you hardly find in many places around the world. Just around a corner you have long sandy beaches, paradise islands, virgin coral reefs, tropical rain forests; and the mighty Mount Kinabalu is only 90 minutes away. Kota Kinabalu is situated on the tropical island of Borneo, and is the state capital of the Malaysian state Sabah, which is one of the two states of East Malaysia.
The location of the city is absolutely amazing; and from the airport it is just a short ride to mostly any hotel. You find a world class sailing marina and championship golf courses as well as both first class holiday resorts and good hotels for the budget traveler.
Kota Kinabalu is tropical, with hot and humid weather year round and a climate dictated by tropical monsoons. It thus offers a wet environment, with rain falling most of the year. The trick is to travel here when it doesn't rain so much, which is in February, though March and April are also relatively dry.
Best time to go:
Weather in Kota Kinabalu is fairly consistent and tourists visit all year round. However, January to March is thought of as the dry season and is probably the best time to visit. On the other hand, Kota Kinabalu weather during November to January is best avoided by those visitors who aren't keen on crowds; there are a number of Catholic festivals at this time.

Mosquitoes around Kota Kinabalu are particularly vicious, so insect repellent is a must. Long sleeves and long trousers are also advised around the times of dawn and dusk. Those planning on touring the jungle should bring some decent walking boots and a small backpack for sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses and a hat. A poncho is useful for visitors who get stuck outdoors in heavy rain.
